Chris Janssens brought Wesley Sonck back into the starting line up for the crucial home derby against Mechelen. Mathijson the player to make way. The match could hardly have begun worse for Lierse. In the first minute David Destorme fired over from close range when it looked easier to score. But the reprieve didn't last long. Next attack saw Ayew bring down Diabang in the penalty area. Penalty for Mechelen, and perhaps Ayew lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Julien Gorius made no mistake from the penalty spot: 0-1.
Mechelen continued to dicate and but for heroics from Kawashima, Lierse could have been dead and buried by half time. The Japanese keeper making excellent saves from efforts from Destorme and Diabang. Lierse only producing a shot from Dodo Elgabas in response. Ma-Kalambay pushing over the bar.
Controversy on 35 minutes. A clear handball by a Mechelen defender in the area went unseen by referee Jeroen Van De Velde, and Lierse denied a clear penalty.
The tempo dropped for the remainder of the first half, other than referee Van De Velde seemingly giving almost every marginal decision in favour of the visitors. Much to the frustration of the home support. 0-1 at the break.
Lierse started the second half much better and with more aggression. After Ma-Kalambay failed to clear properly, Dodo Elgabas retrieved possession. The Egyptian's shot appeared to be heading low into the far corner, but it rebounded off the post back into the arms of a relieved Ma-Kalambay.
Mechelen had at that point shown very little in the second half, but with their first attack of note, they doubled their lead. A quick counter saw Diabang pick out Cordaro, and he fired low into the far corner: 0-2.
On 65 minutes Elgabas went down under a challenge in the Mechelen penalty area. This time Van De Velde pointed to the spot. Elgabas took the responsibility himself and calmly slotted the ball past Ma-Kalambay: 1-2. From the restart Mechelen immediately went up the other end. Diabang went around Kawashima but inexplicably hit the outside of the post when it seemed near impossible to miss. Lierse staright up the other end but a cross evaded everyone in a yellow shirt in the area.
Lierse continued to apply pressure, but an equaliser was proving elusive. Sonck had a shot saved well by Ma-Kalambay and Kovacs fired over when well placed from an assist by Sonck.
Ten minutes left and Flavio was brought on for his Lierse debut. Thomas Wils making way. From a Sonck throw in, Peter Kovacs produced a nice control and shot, but again Ma-Kalambay was in the way.
Substitute Fréderic Frans came also close to equalisung from a close range effort resulting from a free kick, but his shot went wide. Well into four minutes of added time when from a Lierse free kick, debutant Flavio headed the ball over a helpless Ma-Kalambay: 2-2. Delirium for the home support. A point rescued in extremis. A valuable point as it turned out, with both teams below Lierse in the table, Westerlo & STVV, losing their home matches.
