Lierse lost 1-2 at home to Standard Liège in the first leg of their Cofidis Cup quarter final on Wednesday evening. 

Chris Janssens brought Peter Kovacs into the starting eleven. He was supported by Bidaoui and Claasen on the flanks. Dodo Elgabas had  a slight injury and was omitted with a view to Boxing Days league match at Beerschot.

The visitors scored with the first chance of the contest: Cyriac picked out Batshuayi with a backheel. Batshuayi won his duel with Frans and stroked the ball past Kawashima: 0-1. Lierse immediately went in search of an equaliser. The biggest chance fell to Kris De Wree when his on target header from a Maric free kick was turned over the bar by Standard keeper Moris.

On the half hour Bathsuayi broke through the middle again. From a tight angle the young striker finished well: 0-2. Lierse continued to press. Frans' header via the back of Buyens landed in the arms of Moris. On the stroke of half time, Stein Huysegems appeared to have halved the deficit, but saw his effort ruled out for offside. 0-2 for the visitors at the break.

A double change for Lierse at halftime. Stein Huysegems and Daylon Claasen were withdrawn and replaced by Flavio and Yasser Hussein.

Barely two minutes into the second half and Lierse reduced the arrears. Kovacs beat Ciman on the right hand side of the penalty area and picked out Amado Flavio. Flavio's shot was saved by Moris but the rebound fell to Bidaoui, who stroked the ball back into the net: 1-2.

The tempo of the match dropped after that and there were fewer chances than in the first half. Lierse appeared to have a good claim for a penalty when Ciman had Flavio in a judo hold, but referee Geldhof waved away the protests.

As the match neared the final whistle, Lierse went in search of an equaliser. With ten minutes remaining Flavio headed against the bar. The Angolan's effort deserved better. A few minutes Frans had a shot on the turn saved by Moris. At the other end Standard sub Camara saw his low shot rebound of Kawashima's right hand post. In injury time substitute Sonck had an excellent chance to salvage a draw but his effort was well stopped by an alert Moris.

So Lierse will got to Liège on 18th anuary with a 1-2 deficit.
