Close to the end of the transfer deadline, Lierse have signed the Hungarian striker Peter Kovacs.

Lierse had shown interest in one of the top players in the Norwegian league for some time, but had encountered resistance from his club Odd Grenland, who raised the asking price. CEO Neel de Ceulaer and Technical director Herman Helleputte had scouted Kovacs last week in Norway, but their obvious interest forced up the asking price. Personal terms were quickly agreed with Kovacs. Ultimately an agreement was reached between the two clubs.

Peter Kovacs has signed a two year contract with an option for a further year.

CEO Neel De Ceulaer: “Kovacs is a real striker, in every sense of the word. He has a nose for goal. Just what we need up front. He knows where the goal is. A really good acquistion. But it doesn't stop there. We know that due to various injuries, we're fragile at the back. So in that area there's work to be done. We're not sitting on our laurels, our ambitions are higher than that. Ok, we currently with no points from five matches, but Lierse are aiming higher. Look, we knew beforehand that we had a tough few opening fixtures. Bad luck has cost us points at Mechelen and Sint Truiden, and at home to KV Kortrijk. But our time will come. Stay calm. We're not sitting still and will get more additions to the squad before the transfer deadline.”

Peter Kovacs played in Hungary for Újpest and Vác, Lahti and Haka in Finland, and Tromsø, Viking, Strømsgodset and Odd Grenland in Norway. His girlfriend is the Norwegian international Melissa Wiik. He was Finnish champions with Haka in 2000, and won the cup with them in  2002.  In 2008 he was top scorer in the Norwegian First Division. He scored 16 goals last year. He is 32 (07/02/78). He is 1 meter 97 and weighs 97 kilo.

Technical director Herman Helleputte: “I don't like to say it, but he could be the revelation in the Belgian first division this season. He knows his way to goal. I'm very happy that we've able to get him.”

Trainer Aimé Anthuenis:”A fantastic player. I'm happy that the board are working on strengthening the squad.  Kovacs is really a player that can make the difference. I also know that reinforcements are on the way for the defence. No, I'm not worried”
